Can your running data predict an injury before it happens?
September 29, 2026
A study tracking 643 marathoners found that running data from Strava and weekly surveys could not reliably predict which otherwise healthy runners would sustain an injury the following week. Nearly half reported an injury that forced them to modify training, but the strongest predictor was often having already experienced pain or an injury—rather than a specific mileage threshold. Researchers say larger datasets and more precise injury timing may improve future models, but runners should still pay attention to warning signs such as persistent pain, unusual fatigue, or feeling unwell.
