A third day of racing has been added to Kinetic Multisports' SavageMan Triathlon Festival, along with a sizable prize purse for athletes that compete all three days.
(DURHAM, North Carolina) — Early registration is now open for the Big Savage Challenge, a unique three-day event set in the mountains of Western Maryland.
After Hurricane Florence forced the cancellation of the 2018 SavageMan Triathlon, Kinetic Multisports has doubled down on the event by adding more racing and prize money to the weekend at Deep Creek State Park.
New to the 2019 schedule is the three-day Big Savage Challenge (September 13-15, 2019), which will feature a $10,000 prize purse for the podium finishers. Friday features the multi-loop Swim-Run #GoKinetic Prologue, Saturday is the Olympic Triathlon (SavageMan 30), and Sunday is the Long Course Triathlon (SavageMan 70). Only athletes that compete and finish all three days are eligible for this historic prize purse.
SavageMan was voted the toughest triathlon in North America by Triathlete Magazine in 2010 and has hosted top professional triathletes such as Cameron Wurf, Dave Scott, and Phillip Graves.
“We are excited to offer a unique racing format on Friday. The Swim-Run #GoKinetic Prologue is a multi-loop, swim-run event. Athletes are never more than 200 meters from shore or a half mile down the road,” Kinetic Multisports owner Greg Hawkins said.
“Everyone is going to shake their legs out on Friday before the longer races, so they might as well redline it a bit to get a time advantage. It will be a fun event to race and a great one to watch!”
For those not familiar with SavageMan, it is rated as one of the hardest triathlons in the world. The SavageMan 70 features over 6,000 feet of climbing on the bike course, including one ascent that’s seven miles in length. Another section called the Westernport Wall has a 32 percent grade. Athletes that make it to the top of this climb without setting a foot down have bricks engraved with their names cemented into the road.
“SavageMan is an amazing race that takes place in a beautiful location,” Hawkins continued. “The entire community comes out to support the race and cheer on the bike course. Think Tour de France, it’s insane.”
