Drinking Fountain is now Fully Funded
July 6, 2017 – Beyond Monumental, the 501(c)3 non-profit responsible for the CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon and the Indy Half Marathon and 5K at Fort Ben, has announced it will donate the remaining funds needed to complete the fundraising effort by Indy Runners to install a drinking fountain along the Central Canal Towpath at 52nd Street near Butler University.
The towpath is a crushed limestone path through Indianapolis, reaching from 30th Street at White River to Broad Ripple Village. It is frequented by thousands of runners, walkers, and cyclists throughout the year. Despite its popularity, there are currently no water sources for trail users along the five-mile route.
The drinking fountain project aimed to raise $25,000 for the purchase, installation, connection to water lines and yearly maintenance of the fountain. Other notable donors who helped fund the project include City of Indianapolis, Citizens Energy, and Shiel Sexton.
“Beyond Monumental is proud to donate to this project, and we’re especially happy to designate dollars for this project from our Carlton Ray Fund,” said Jed Cornforth, executive director of Beyond Monumental. “We see the opportunity as a way to support the running community that has supported our races the past ten years.”
The Carlton Ray Fund is a special fund created by Beyond Monumental in the name of the organization’s founder, Carlton Ray. Ray, still a current board member, created the Monumental Marathon in 2008 as a way to celebrate the city through running. Ray’s vision at the time was to support the community, particularly youth, through any proceeds from the race.
Indy Runners is a non-profit, volunteer-led running club, (the largest in the State (since 1978) with club runs around the city, training programs, and an expanding Giving Back Program. They have coordinated deck and trail improvement projects, shoe donations, and scholarships for High School seniors. The Drinking Fountain Project is their largest community endeavor to date. This announcement is the seventh of 10 in a series that Beyond Monumental will release in anticipation of the tenth anniversary of the CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon taking place on Saturday, November 4.
