Event hosted a record 16,000 participants for Saturday events, raised more than $1 million for charity and generated an estimated $13.1 million in direct spending
PITTSBURGH – The 2019 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events had another banner year, as Pittsburgh hosted the USATF Half Marathon Championships for the second year in a row and a record number participated in “Family Day” on Saturday. For detailed information about the record numbers and more, see the 2019 “By the Numbers” infographic.
The Pittsburgh Marathon also lived up to its reputation for being a premiere destination road race once again. One reason for this world-class status is the spirit and commitment of the dedicated running community to connect passion with purpose and MOVE for a greater good. In 2019, more than $1 million was raised through the legs and hearts of 2,046 charity runners! The Run for a Reason Charity Program presented by Bank of America inspired 14,407 unique donations for 81 different charities, with 92 percent of the funds raised remaining in Pittsburgh.
“The funds raised through the program truly make a difference, so P3R is proud to provide this substantial fundraising opportunity every year to many of Pittsburgh’s and the nation’s most reputable nonprofits,” said incoming P3R CEO Troy Schooley. “What started as a small idea in 2009 has become a pillar of the Pittsburgh Marathon. This year’s fundraising efforts add to the great legacy of the program, which has raised more than $13 million since its inception.”
The community impact of Pittsburgh’s flagship running event goes far beyond the Run for a Reason Charity Program. For example, a record 6,700 kids and their parents from 135 local schools and organizations completed 25 miles of physical activity through the Kids of Steel program and then celebrated the “last mile” of their marathon on race weekend. More families participated than ever before, making the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon one of the largest youth races in the country!
“Race weekend has truly become a family weekend, and we continue to encourage runners of all ages to MOVE and reach new fitness goals,” Schooley said. “All of us at P3R could not have imagined the positive impact the Pittsburgh Marathon could have on this city, and we are so proud that Pittsburgh has evolved from a once ‘unfit city’ to one of the top running cities in America with beautiful city and county parks and trail systems.”
While nearly 70 percent of participants were local, the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events also brought tens of thousands of visitors to the Steel City this year. Pittsburgh Marathon-related events not only showcased the Pittsburgh community to runners from across the globe but also generated an estimated $13.1 million in direct spending according to official tourism promotion agency VisitPITTSBURGH.
