(Logan, UT – December 14, 2018) Altra’s athletes dominated the Brazos Bend 100 trail race event with Kyle Pietari winning the 100-miler, Ian Sharman winning the 50-miler and Jeff Ball winning the marathon. Despite the wet weather that made the trails slick and muddy, Pietari, Sharman and Ball grabbed first place finishes.

Pietari was first in the 100 mile in 15:51:26. His win at Brazos Bend came just weeks after winning and setting a course record at the Dead Horse 50-Miler.

“I had wet socks for 99 miles, but my feet felt fine all day,” Pietari said. “There was a lot of deep, slippery mud. Some sections had tacky, sticky mud that made every step take extra effort. Other sections added a pound of mud to each shoe, causing me look forward to splashing through the next ankle-deep puddle to wash the extra weight off. I damaged my achilles sliding in the first ten miles, then powered through pain all day. I had bathroom issues from a stomach bug. I got severely nauseous and executed a puke and rally at mile 75. I had a blast. I crossed the finish line both happy and feeling like I’d spent a week in a torture chamber.”

Sharman grabbed the win in the 50 mile with a time of 6:16:30. Brazos Bend was Sharman’s first major race back after a spinal and shoulder injury, but he was determined to run and get his UTMB points.

“The spinal and shoulder injury wiped out my training until 7 weeks ago,” Sharman said. “But I got my UTMB points and got caked in mud. So good to be running completely uninjured again!”

Ball won the marathon with a time of 3:09:44. After his win, Ball jumped back on the course to pace Pietari for 16 miles, helping him on to his win.

“My day started off with running the marathon where I took first,” Ball said. “Then I got the privilege of running with Kyle Pietari on one of his 16.7 mile loops on his way to the victory in the 100-miler.”

Pietari wore the Altra Superior 3.5, while Sharman and Ball both wore the Altra Lone Peak 4.

Brazos Bend 100 is part of the Altra-sponsored trail series Trail Racing Over Texas. TROT offers 5k’s to 100-milers, both flat and fast to hard and hilly, that showcase the best trail running Texas has to offer.

About Altra

While working at a running store, Altra founder Golden Harper was frustrated that modern running shoe technology caused poor running form and had not decreased running injuries. His passion to create a shoe that followed the science produced Altra’s FootShape™ toe box, Zero Drop™ platform and Fit4Her™ female-specific shoes. Since its founding in 2011, Harper and co-founder Brian Beckstead have grown Altra from one to 30 shoe styles, winning multiple Editor’s Choice awards and distribution in more than 60 countries.
