Adventure Racing Returns To The San Francisco Bay Area As Gold Rush Launches New 12-Hour Challenge
July 1, 2026

Gold Rush Adventure Racing Announces the Gold Rush Adventure Challenge: Dawn to Dusk on September 19, 2026
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (July 1, 2026) ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ — Gold Rush Adventure Racing announced the launch of the Gold Rush Adventure Challenge: Dawn to Dusk, a new 12-hour adventure race taking place on September 19, 2026, across the Marin Headlands, San Francisco Bay, and Angel Island. The event marks the return of large-scale adventure racing to one of the sport’s historic regions and has been added to the Adventure Racing World Series calendar.
Teams of one to four racers will navigate entirely by map and compass, traveling by foot, mountain bike, and kayak through a course that showcases some of Northern California’s most iconic landscapes. Participants will traverse coastal ridgelines, historic sites, rugged trails, and scenic waterways while making strategic decisions about how to maximize their progress throughout the day.
Unlike many traditional endurance events, adventure racing rewards navigation, teamwork, and route choice as much as physical fitness. Teams are not expected to visit every checkpoint. Instead, racers must determine the best route through the course and decide how much of the challenge they can complete within the 12-hour time limit.
“The Bay Area is one of the most incredible adventure racing venues anywhere in the country,” said Greg Callas, President of Gold Rush Adventure Racing. “We’re excited to bring racers back to a venue that combines world-class mountain biking, paddling, navigation and trekking in some of the most iconic terrain in California.”
The Dawn to Dusk Challenge is designed to be accessible to newcomers while still providing meaningful navigation and endurance challenges for experienced racers. All kayak equipment is provided, reducing barriers to entry and making the event more approachable for athletes from trail running, cycling, paddling, triathlon, and other endurance sports.
Event Highlights:
- 12-hour dawn-to-dusk adventure race

- Trekking, mountain biking, and kayaking
- Navigation by map and compass (no GPS)
