A race finish at 3,365m: GFNY Colombia this weekend

February 22, 2017

A sold out field of 1800 riders competes at one of the world's most competitive all comers races

NEW YORK CITY, February 22, 2017 – This weekend’s GFNY Colombia will finish on top of the infamous La Cuchilla climb at 3365m / 11,040ft. It’s the world’s highest all-comers race finish line. And it’s popular: the 1800 entries to the race were sold out a month before the race.

GFNY Colombia opens the 2017 GFNY World season, which consists of 14 races around the globe. It offers two distance options: a long route of 138km with 2439m of climbing and a medium route of 98km with 1471m of climbing. The course travels through the Sabana de Bogotá, which is at an average of 2600m elevation.

The town of Guatavita, situated just 30 min from the country’s capital of Bogota, hosts the start and finish of the race. It’s also a very popular destination for hundreds of cyclists on a daily basis because it’s at the bottom of La Cuchilla.

Colombians are as passionate about road cycling as they are good at it: winning GFNY Colombia might arguably be harder than winning the Campagnolo GFNY World Championship in NYC. Past years’ New York winners Corredor and Montana, both from Bogota, are yet to crack winning on home turf. Both are back at it as are the defending champions: multiple GFNY winner Camila Cortes and Carlos Trujillo.

“Fully closed roads, passionate cyclists and amazing landscapes provide an incredible experience during the race,” says GFNY President Lidia Fluhme. “Climbing to the top of La Cuchilla after over 100km of racing will be a tremendous challenge.”

Also adding to the weekend’s attractions are the Colombian National Road Championships being held in the same area. The men’s National Road Championship will be taking place the afternoon of GFNY Colombia.
