The Physiology Behind Women Kicking A** at Ultraman Races

When professional triathlete and multi-time iron-distance champion Michelle Vesterby crossed the finish line of Ultraman Arizona in 24:28:06 a couple of weeks ago and became the race’s overall champion, the first man didn’t follow until more than two hours later in 26:57:57. Further, five of the top 10 overall finishers at this year’s Ultraman Arizona were women.

Vesterby’s outstanding win isn’t the only example of women crushing it at ultra-distance triathlons. Professional triathlete Dede Griesbauer set a new women’s world record at the 2020 Ultraman World Championships in Hawai’i, in a time of 22:48:31 (the previous record was 24:07:11) and was the second overall finisher. Did we mention she was 49 years old at the time? Triathlete

It seems like everyone and their cousin is part of a different run club in 2024, and it’s hard for one club to distinguish itself from another besides pace, meeting time and location. Grammy award-winning DJ and producer Diplo (Thomas Pentz) found a way to make his new run club a little different, combining a few of his favourite interests—running, music and travel.

The club, which is titled, Diplo’s Run Club, involves a large 5K group run, followed by a music festival that will apparently “ignite your senses.” Instead of just going to a bar or club with your running friends after a run, Diplo says he’s bringing the concert to the run in various U.S. cities. The DJ claims his run club will be more than just an event; it’ll be a celebration, with DJs, live bands, and of course, drinks. Canadian Running

March 26, 2024 (SEATTLE) — Gretchen Schoenstein achieved an extraordinary feat by completing two half marathons on opposite coasts in two days. Schoenstein ran the Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon in Washington, D.C., on March 16, 2024. Later that night she flew to the West Coast to complete the Shamrock Half Marathon Run in Portland, Oregon the next day, March 17, 2024. Her remarkable effort is a personal triumph and a significant fundraising endeavor, as she raised more than $10,400 so far for the Benaroya Research Institute (BRI), a global leader in human immunology research.

“I’ve always been about challenging myself to do impossible things,” said Schoenstein. “These two races tested my endurance and abilities, but they were just a glimpse into what we can overcome with determination and a heart full of hope. Each race and the journey between them brought me into contact with individuals who opened up about their own battles with autoimmune diseases or their loved ones’ struggles. It’s a powerful reminder that every step I take is not just for my own journey but for the countless others who are part of this shared battle.”

A seasoned runner and autoimmune disease warrior, Gretchen has lived with autoimmune diseases since she was nine years old. Despite being told she might never run again after being diagnosed with Sarcoidosis in 2006, which affects both the lungs and joints, she has now completed her 121st and 122nd half marathons.

Gretchen’s participation in these events coincides with March, Autoimmune Disease Awareness Month, highlighting the challenges those living with autoimmune conditions face. Autoimmune diseases affect one in 10 Americans. These diseases have no cure, and most treatments target the symptoms but not the actual cause of the disease. By supporting BRI, she contributes to the research that could one day lead to a cure for more than 110 autoimmune diseases, including Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), multiple sclerosis (MS) and type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Established in 1956 and located in Seattle, BRI is at the forefront of immune system and autoimmune disease research. BRI takes a holistic approach to autoimmune diseases, studying the entire immune system and using insights about one disease to make progress against others. Over the decades, BRI has made significant strides in understanding the immune system, including the development of MHC class II tetramer technology in the 1990s, which revolutionized the ability to track specific immune cells. In recent years, BRI has broadened its mission to include personalized medicine and prevention strategies, emphasizing collaboration to accelerate the translation of lab discoveries into life-changing patient care.

“Gretchen’s remarkable achievement of completing two half marathons on two coasts in just two days is a powerful testament to the human spirit’s resilience and determination,” said Jane Buckner, President of the Benaroya Research Institute. “Like Gretchen, BRI is pushing the boundaries of immunology research. Her support and the awareness she raises are invaluable to our mission, helping us advance closer to our goal of understanding, treating, and ultimately curing autoimmune diseases.

IRVINE, Calif. – The Tour de Saddleback returned for its annual event this past weekend, providing 302 participants the opportunity to ride through Orange County while raising over $1300 for the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF). PCRF, headquartered locally in Irvine, Calif., raises funds to accelerate scientific breakthroughs that transform pediatric cancer care. Since 1982, PCRF has invested more than $58 million in pediatric cancer research, and has raised a large portion of its funds through events, like the Tour de Saddleback, while making an impact nationwide.

The Tour de Saddleback offered participants distances of 50, 35 and 15 miles to ride through seven different communities and cities of Orange County, including Laguna Hills, Santiago Canyon, Rancho Santa Margarita and Irvine. The ride started and finished in the heart of Orange County at Irvine Valley College.

The focus of the Tour de Saddleback is a noncompetitive, rules-of-the-road ride to provide participants a unique opportunity to enjoy the local area, while fundraising for a great cause.

“With this only being our second year of producing the Tour de Saddleback, I couldn’t be more thrilled with the outcome,” said Mike Bone, President and CEO of Spectrum Sports Management, which produces the Tour de Saddleback. “It was amazing to see so many people enjoying the beauty of our community while raising funds for a great organization. Partnering with PCRF for this event has been a great experience, and I can’t wait to see what the future years have in store.”

After finishing the ride, participants continued their Tour de Saddleback and fundraising experience by enjoying the Post Ride Celebration. The celebration included a beer garden where participants 21 and older were provided one complimentary beer, and all additional beer sales went directly to PCRF. Participants also collected their race day t-shirts and medals which both showcase the iconic Tour de Saddleback logo.

Spectrum Sports Management, producer of the Tour de Saddleback, will also be hosting Bike the Coast on Nov. 2, 2024. Over 1600 participants took part in the ride last year, taking them through iconic beach towns along Highway 101, including Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar, before reaching the finish line in Oceanside. The ride included a variety of distances, which allowed for participation by all ages and experience levels. Participants can choose from multiple distances, including seven, 15, 25, 50 and 100 miles. Registration for Bike the Coast is open now.

supertri is accelerating its growth in the Middle East and has agreed extended broadcasting deals with beIN Sports and the Saudi Sports Channel as well as producing an Arabic commentary feed live from the venue for all its events in 2024.

The new agreements are testament to the work supertri has already undertaken and support from key stakeholders to grow across events, digital platforms and broadcast.

Both beIN Sports and the Saudi Sports Channel will show full live, repeats and highlights of both supertri E World Triathlon Championships powered by Zwift and supertri’s League events later in the year.

The commitment to Arabic commentary follows a successful launch in 2023, which helped drive a 66 per cent growth in live viewership and tripled total viewership in the region, including in Saudi Arabia, where supertri has an event in NEOM and is actively involved in growing the sport in the Kingdom and the wider region.

supertri CEO and Co-Founder, Michael D’hulst, said: “Our broadcast deals with beIN Sports and the Saudi Sports Channel are testament to the growing interest in triathlon in the region, which supertri has helped to drive and grow over the past three years. We have been the sport’s leaders in not only hosting events in the region, but also putting down firm roots to help grow triathlon at a grassroots level and inspire a new generation of girls and boys to realise this is a sport they can excel in.

“Our efforts in going to schools, supporting the Saudi Triathlon Federation, bringing young athletes into our pro camps and making our events truly accessible to a wide audience by producing dedicated Arabic commentary are testament to us being market leaders in the region who have proven their commitment, and the support of beIN and the Saudi Sports Channel is testament to our work and their desire to collaborate to grow this even further is very exciting.”

supertri’s first event of 2024 takes place on April 13, with the supertri E World Triathlon Championships powered by Zwift at the London Aquatic Centre.

supertri’s vision is ‘To Inspire The Competitor In Everyone’ and its Arabic commentary has helped grow the sport in the region, delivering entertainment and inspiration to get people interested in triathlon and in health and wellness.

supertri has also supported the Saudi Triathlon Federation and helped them to get technical officials qualified to run events in the country as well as taking pro athletes on school visits to inspire a generation of girls and boys to get active. In addition, it has raised the profile of the sport substantially through its broadcast initiatives in the region and by allowing elite Saudi athletes the chance to compete, as well as running a ’Stars of Tomorrow’ programme to support the Federation’s budding youngsters.
