Historic Jackson Park hosts participants from around the world
CHICAGO, Sept. 24—Blue skies and sunshine greeted 12,000 runners Sunday in Chicago’s Jackson Park as they participated in the 22nd annual Chicago Half Marathon and 5K presented by My Fit Key and produced by Life Time®—Healthy Way of Life, the nation’s only Healthy Way of LIfe brand.
Individuals representing all 50 states and 40 countries were among the registrants who toed the line in historic Jackson Park and then ran either a half-marathon (13.1 mile) or 5K (3.1 mile) course before finishing again among the bucolic meadows and ponds that make the Chicago’s lakefront south side so picturesque. Athletes ran through the University of Chicago’s campus and a traffic-free Lake Shore Drive, taking in breathtaking views of Chicago’s skyline before entering Jackson Park, once the site of the 1893 World Columbian Exposition.
The men’s winner of the half marathon was Dan Kremske, of Woodstock, IL, who crossed the finish line in 1:07:04. Jane Bareikis of Midlothian, IL, took the first prize for the women, with a time of 1:17:13. They both received $1,000 in prize money.
More than $450,000 was raised for for various local and national charity partners including the Life Time Foundation and the Official Charity Partner Chicago Run. Both committed to supporting healthier lives through youth programs such as Chicago Run’s Chicago Runners designed to instill the daily habit of running and physical activity during the school day for elementary school students.
The Chicago Half Marathon and 5K presented by My Fit Key was the second of two races in the 2018 Chicagoland Half Marathon Series, which also included the May 20, 2018 Byline Bank Chicago Spring Half Marathon and 10K. Participants who complete in both half marathon distances earned a custom, 26.2 Challenge finisher medal at the final event today. Registration for the 2019 Series is already underway, and registration for the 2019 Half Marathon next fall will open October 2018.
