Women and Kids Reach for Fitness Goals at iTRYathlon Women’s & Youth Triathlon & 5K Inaugural Event in Irvine

July 12th, 2012

Hundreds of women and children are exploring a new way of staying in shape and attempting their first triathlon or 5K run/walk.  The inaugural iTRYathlon will take place at Northwood High School in Irvine on July 28, 2012.  The event is presented by Destination Irvine and benefits the Irvine Public Schools Foundation (IPSF).

This empowering event is for all fitness levels and abilities. The main event for women and youth (boys included) ages 8-13 is a 3 mile run, a 9 mile bike ride, and a 200 meter swim.  The swim portion takes place in Northwood High School pool.  The Junior Triathlon for kids ages 6-12 (boys included) is a ½ mile run, a 2 mile bike ride, and a 50 meter swim. There is also a 5K Run/Walk for women and youth.

Tri La Vie, a local triathlon training group, is currently training women to participate in their first triathlon event.  Local coach and trainer Pamela Nichol is holding a junior triathlon clinic for kids 6-12 years old on July 21st to help children prepare for race day.

In addition to Destination Irvine, sponsors include: A Road Bike 4 U, Orchard Hills Shopping Center, Mike Dunn Realtor, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Doctor’s Ambulance, Whole Foods, Sports Conditioning and Rehabilitation (SCAR), Rausch Physical Therapy, The Printery, Kenny the Printer and Hammer Nutrition.

The Irvine Public Schools Foundation is the designated charity for the event.  Participants have the opportunity to raise money for IPSF while enjoying training with their friends and family.  “IPSF is excited about being a part of a community event that promotes fitness and supports our schools at the same time.  Our partnership with Destination Irvine and the Irvine Chamber of Commerce is another example of how our effort to provide educational excellence in Irvine is valued by, and serves to unite the community,” said Neda Zaengle, CEO of IPSF.

Race Director Jonathan Pauley designed a beautiful and scenic course along the foothills of Irvine.  “The course is great – it starts and finishes at Northwood High School. The run takes participants behind the school with picturesque views of Irvine.  There is about a mile of a nice hill climb, but the view from the top is worth it.  The bike ride will go out and back and loop down Portola Parkway between Culver and Jeffrey.  The swim will take place in the high school’s pool,” said Pauley.  “We wanted to create a fun, safe environment for women and kids to experience a triathlon.  Many women are intimidated by participating alongside men or swimming in the ocean.  We’ve eliminated those elements to create an event where women feel comfortable competing.”
