Fitness device leader supporting the next generation in pro cycling with sponsorship of long-running U23 development team directed by Axel Merckx
(Atlanta, GA – March 8th, 2018) – Wahoo Fitness, the leader in connected fitness devices has just announced its commitment to the future of professional cycling through a new sponsorship of Hagens Berman Axeon Pro Cycling Team – the latest addition to its growing list of professional cycling teams racing with Wahoo devices in 2018. Now in its tenth season as a professional cycling development program, Hagens Berman Axeon remains under the ownership and direction of former Belgian National Champion, Axel Merckx – son of five-time Tour de France champion Eddy Merckx.
Some of the sport’s brightest stars have come from the Axeon family, including three of its most recent 2017 graduates Chris Lawless (Team Sky), Logan Owen (Team EF Drapac), and Neilson Powless (LottoNL Jumbo), all of whom are racing at the UCI WorldTour level in 2018. The 16-man 2018 Axeon squad will be led by U23 Individual Time Trial World Champion Mikkel Bjerg, U23 United States Cyclocross National Champion Christopher Blevins, and William Barta, who finished on the podium at the 2017 U23 edition of Liege-Bastogne-Liege.
In lining up for 2018 races, Bjerg, Blevins, Barta, and the rest of the Axeon squad will be utilizing Wahoo’s critically-acclaimed ELEMNT BOLT GPS head unit, which was designed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) testing to be the most aerodynamic cycling computer in the professional peloton. The team will also be using Wahoo’s Bluetooth-enabled TICKR Heart Rate Monitor – another key component of the team’s performance strategy which serves riders with key training metrics and the measurement of critical race-winning efforts.
“In the last decade, we’ve gotten WorldTour contracts for 26 of our 80 riders – an incredibly successful graduation rate that would not be possible without the support of industry-leading brands like Wahoo,” said Axel Merckx, Owner and Team Director of Hagens Berman Axeon. “Since our program is all about developing the strengths of individual riders, we’re particularly excited to utilize Wahoo’s category-leading customization to tailor training metrics and ride data specific to each rider’s individual needs.”
“For the better part of the last decade, some of the biggest names in domestic pro cycling have all come from the Axeon family,” said Chip Hawkins, CEO of Wahoo Fitness. with tried-and-tested gains from the Wahoo product ecosystem – gains which are already being recognized and leveraged at the WorldTour level with our partnerships through Team Sky, BORA-Hansgrohe, and KATUSHA ALPECIN.”
