March 14th, 2014

Charlottesville, VA, March 14th, 2014 — Virginia Blood Services and Bad to the Bone Endurance Sports, a leader in the event production industry, have entered a partnership around the Charlottesville Marathon, Half Marathon, 8K and Kids Mile.  Virginia Blood Services signed on as the Title Sponsor for the 8K run and as the Charitable Partner for the Beer Garden associated with the race, sponsored by Miller Lite.  Virginia Blood Services, a major blood supplier to the area for the past 40 years, is looking to expand its reach and donor base by partnering with health and community driven events like the Charlottesville Marathon.

“This partnership makes a lot of sense on so many different levels”, says Dr. Francesca Conte, President of Bad to the Bone LLC.  “Donating blood is a mission that every health conscious runner understands well and that rallies the community together.  We will work with Virginia Blood Services to promote their donor base amongst all the race participants, their families and all the volunteers and staff associated with the race”.

“We look forward to working with Bad to the Bone to extend the reach of Virginia Blood Services” says Michelle Westbay, the Director of Marketing and Communications for Virginia Blood Services.  “Our campaign will extend beyond the race by offering discounts for future Bad to the Bone races to any runner, volunteer or family member visiting a donation center.  We hope everyone involved with the race will hear the message of giving blood local loud and clear!”

Virginia Blood Services employees will be on site at the Miller Lite Beer Garden at the Charlottesville Running and Fitness Expo, the race Expo on Friday, April 4th and Saturday April 5th.   For more information on Virginia Blood Services and all their blood drive locations, please visit http://www.vablood.org/.

About Virginia Blood Services

Founded in 1974, Virginia Blood Services (VBS) has been a staple in the community for decades. This year, the blood supplier will be celebrating its 40th anniversary through different community efforts. VBS is the local, not-for-profit provider of blood products to hospitals. Nearly 2,700 blood drives are held every year, in addition to regular collections from the nine donor centers across Virginia, to help support area patients. It takes more than 400 donations every day to meet the needs of the medical community that VBS supports. In addition to special events throughout different communities, VBS has special programs to thank and encourage special donor groups like their “Everyday Heroes” program, which works with local first responders, and the “High School Scholarship” program, which gives back to supporting high schools through monetary scholarships.
