The team features active and veteran military members who will run the XTERRA Trail Run Worlds half-marathon in gas masks to honor the sacrifice of Marine Cpl. Todd Love, who lost both his legs and part of his left arm when an explosive device was triggered while he was on a reconnaissance mission in Afghanistan
November 23, 2011 (Honolulu, HI) – Team X-T.R.E.M.E. will participate in the 2011 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship on December 4 at Kualoa Ranch in Kaaawa, Hawaii, thanks in part to a generous boost from Outrigger Hotels & Resorts.
Team X-T.R.E.M.E. is a non-profit organization with an ongoing mission to Honor, Empower and Motivate wounded service members of the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns. The team features active and veteran military members who participate in various races across the country to honor the sacrifice of Wounded Warriors through feats of mental and physical endurance.
The last five letters in the team name stand for Train, Rehabilitate, Empower, Motivate, and Endure. They always run races in formation to emphasize teamwork, and they will run the entire 21-kilometer course at Kualoa Ranch with gas masks secured to their faces to symbolize their initiative.
The members of Team X-T.R.E.M.E. will be traveling to Hawaii from various areas of the mainland United States, so sponsorship was crucial.
Outrigger Hotels & Resorts recently stepped in to host the team – and a special guest – during their week in Hawaii.
In addition to the four Team X-T.R.E.M.E. runners, Marine Cpl. Todd Love will accompany the team to Hawaii as their guest of honor. Love lost both his legs and part of his left arm when an explosive device was triggered while he was on a reconnaissance mission in Afghanistan in October 2010.
“Cpl. Love is not deterred by his injuries and is determined to live life to the extreme,” said Jeremy Soles, Founder and President of Team X-T.R.E.M.E. “Cpl. Love is an ambassador of endurance and perseverance in the face of insurmountable odds. It is an honor and pleasure for Team X-T.R.E.M.E. to escort Cpl. Todd Love and his father to Hawaii and to make his XTREME DREAM come true.”
David Carey, President and CEO of Outrigger Enterprises Group, said: “Honorable, brave and dedicated – these adjectives are all defining characteristics of the hard-working members of our U.S. military, a group that we have utmost respect and admiration for. These heroic men and women serve our country, sacrifice their lives, and give their all to maintain our safety and protect our freedom. Their endless sense of service sets them apart, and Outrigger is honored to support them through Team X-T.R.E.M.E.’s participation in the 2011 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship.
Team X-T.R.E.M.E. participated in the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship for the first time last year. Soles said the challenges presented along the course at Kualoa Ranch gave the team incentive to return this year.
“In keeping with the XTERRA reputation, the course at Kualoa Ranch is very challenging. That is the way we like it,” Soles said. “The more grueling the course, the more our mission parallels and honors the service and sacrifice of our nation’s wounded warriors.”
Running members of the team this year will be Soles, Matthew Small, Charles Hewitt and Marko Loubser.
Although Love cannot run with the team, he will participate in several other activities with them while in Hawaii, including surfing and skydiving. In fact, the team plans to skydive with Love onto the race site at Kualoa Ranch on the morning of the race.
“Team X-T.R.E.M.E. is honored to have the support of Outrigger Hotels & Resorts for our 2011 ‘XTREME DREAM’ initiative for Cpl. Todd Love,” Soles said. “Their sponsorship of our rooms will allow us to direct additional funding to make this the most memorable vacation of Cpl. Love’s life.”
The XTERRA Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to provide help, support, and hope to the underprivileged and physically challenged, also dedicated a fundraising project specifically for Team X-T.R.E.M.E.’s trip to Hawaii.
“Team X-T.R.E.M.E. founder Jeremy Soles, a former Sgt. in the United States Marine Corps, launched the organization by running the XTERRA Richmond 10k trail run in a gas mask back in 2009,” explained XTERRA Foundation President Tom Kiely. “That got everyone’s attention, especially fellow service members who understand how difficult it is to breath in those things let alone run a brutal six-mile obstacle course in 100-degree heat. Since then, he’s accomplished increasingly difficult tasks and honored several wounded veterans along the way. We are proud to support his vision.”
Soles noted that several other sponsors have contributed to the Team X-T.R.E.M.E. cause to make the trip possible: Avon Protection Systems, Camelbak, Survival Straps, Extreme Outfitters, Spartyka Nation, Semper Fidelis Health and Wellness, 2XU, Skydive Hawaii and Duke’s Waikiki.
