Local non-profit marks end of spring 2017 season with Surf’s Up running event
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Girls on the Run of the Big Bend, (GOTRBB) a local, non-profit organization that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running, concluded its spring season with the Surf’s Up celebratory 5k. Close to 150 girls crossed the finish line alongside XX running buddies and volunteers, completing the program specially designed to empower young women.
“Our end of season 5k is always such a special event, and we are simply stoked to see our girls daring to catch all the waves that life throws their way,” said Ericka McKibbin, executive director of Girls on the Run of the Big Bend. “As we see the number of girls served by our program continue to grow, we see a shift in girls throughout our community. They are sharing their newfound abilities to inspire joy, lead a healthy lifestyle and live confidently with everyone they meet.”
The event was held in Southwood Town Center, with a route that took girls, buddies and volunteers through the green and spacious paths of the Southwood neighborhood. They were met with cheers and water station support along the three mile route. At the start and finish line, girls and their families enjoyed activities such as bib bedazzling, hair styling, face painting, and a photobooth.
The 20-lesson Girls on the Run curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches to teach understanding self, valuing relationships and teamwork, and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large.
