RunVermont launches search for Executive Director

February 10, 2022

Burlington, VT  /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – RunVermont, a non-profit dedicated to promoting running as a life-long activity, today announced that, after leading the organization for 13 years, Peter Delaney will complete his run as executive director, and that it has launched a nationwide search for a new executive director. RunVermont organizes and produces the People’s United Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay and several other races, offers race coaching, and runs youth programs to engage our next generation of runners.

Peter Delaney will conclude his role as executive director after this year’s May 29 People’s United Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay. Under Delaney’s leadership, RunVermont has implemented many positive changes that have benefitted the running community, including the initiation of new races, including the popular Half Marathon Unplugged and Island Vines, and the growth of the Mini-Milers youth running program. Additionally, Peter has expertly guided the organization through many challenging circumstances, including hosting the first major race to be held safely following the tragic Boston Marathon bombing, accurately rerouting the marathon after pre-race lake flooding, and leading RunVermont through the pandemic and to a safe and successful return to racing. Peter will continue to consult with the organization to help ensure a smooth transition.

“It has been an honor to lead this organization, and to collaborate with our dedicated staff and the tireless team of volunteers who always show up to make our events special,” said Delaney.  “It has been an exciting journey, and I am proud of what we have all accomplished together.”

“Peter has been a guiding force for the organization for many years, and we are extremely grateful for his dedication and leadership,” said Sam Davis, RunVermont Board Chair and running coach. “While we are sad that Peter will be making this change, we wish him the best of luck in his retirement and appreciate that he will ensure that our May 2022 People’s United Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay runs smoothly before he passes the torch. We are fortunate that Peter will continue to have an impact on the Vermont running community in his consulting capacity.”

“During every one of our eight years as the title sponsor of the Vermont City Marathon & Relay, People’s United Bank has become more and more impressed with Peter’s leadership of the small, but mighty team at RunVermont,” said Michael Seaver, Vermont President, People’s United Bank. “We have faced many challenges throughout the years including weather, COVID, construction, and more. Peter has always managed through these challenges and delivered quality events to the community and important revenue to Burlington area businesses.  We will miss him greatly and wish him well in the next phase of life.”

“Peter Delaney has been a force for good for so many people in Burlington, from all over Vermont, and from all over our country and beyond by encouraging runners of all ages and abilities to spend time running along Burlington’s remarkable Bike Path, through our bustling Church Street Marketplace, and all over our vibrant City, and we thank you for your many years of impactful service, Peter,” said Mayor Miro Weinberger. “RunVermont and the People’s United Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay are an integral part of the fabric of Burlington. Marathon weekend is an incredible experience that brings out the best in our community – from the determined runners to the dedicated volunteers to exuberant fans and supporters who line the racecourse. We look forward to welcoming RunVermont’s next director to Burlington and to collaborating with RunVermont for years to come.”

Along with producing the People’s United Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay, the executive director will help lead RunVermont’s many of other races, coaching and youth programs and the RunVermont team.  The board of directors is leading the search for a new executive director who has a passion for running, as well as the leadership experience and skills to continue to move the organization forward. “RunVermont has such a strong presence in Vermont and does so much to encourage new runners to take up the sport and existing runners to step up to the next level,” added Davis.
