Over 5,000 Runners in Attendance
(LOS ANGELES) – The giving game was real this Thanksgiving at the Fifth Annual Turkey Trot Los Angeles presented by UAE-USA United. Despite being the hottest Thanksgiving since 1877 and hitting a high of 92 degrees, over 5,000 participants joined together to celebrate Thanksgiving and make a difference in the lives of Los Angeles’s neediest citizens.
Centered in the Skid Row area of downtown LA, The Midnight Mission provides a sustainable path to self-sufficiency for those suffering from homelessness. With homelessness increasing 23% from 2016 to 2017 and nearly 58,000 people without a home, their services are especially crucial in Los Angeles today.
This year, the Turkey Trot LA made it a goal to step up their giving game. By partnering with the Consul General of the UAE, BOMBAS, Etihad Airways, and CLIF, the event raised over $22,000 dollars for The Midnight Mission.
Perhaps the best part of this event is seeing families make a tradition out of doing good for themselves (exercising) and doing good for others. “It’s so amazing to see families of all ages get excited about living an active lifestyle together,” said Race Director, Brennan Lindner. “The ultimate reward is making an impact on our community here in L.A. and providing the opportunity for people to have a family tradition of running DTLA.”
The partnership with BOMBAS made it possible for this year’s participants to give back while taking home a pair of the coziest socks. For each pair purchased, another pair plus $6.00, was donated to The Midnight Mission. With an especially generous donation of 8,000 socks from BOMBAS, plus participants purchases, close to 9,000 pairs were donated. As the number one clothing item requested in homeless shelters, you can be sure these socks will be worn. Thanks to a generous donation from Etihad Airways, plus participant donations, the event also donated hundreds of new blankets to the homeless community.
